Notice of Entrance Examination


Application forms may be obtained at the City of Harlingen, City Hall, 118 East Tyler, Harlingen, Texas, or by calling the Human Resources Department at (956) 216-5020

      

Applications must be returned with the requested documentation or the application will be considered incomplete and the application will not be accepted.


Employment Process


The employment process includes a:

Written Examination
Physical Agility Test
Background Investigation
Oral Board Interview
Drug Screening
Physical Examination
Psychological Examination
Functional Testing
Polygraph Examinations

     


Minimum Qualifications to Apply

Education:
High School graduate or equivalent (GED); successful completion of 30 accredited college hours; or 2 years of military service with an honorable discharge; or have a current certification from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education.

Age:
At least 21 years of age and not have reached his/her 36th birthday. A person who is 36 years of age and under 45 may be certified as eligible for a beginning position if the person has at least five years experience as a peace officer or at least five years of military experience.

Citizenship:
Shall be a United States citizen and must be able to read, write and speak English.

Salary Information

Police Recruit: $26,205 annually

Officer Step 1: $29,336 annually

Sergeant Step 1: $39,210 annually

Lieutenant Step 1: $44,351 annually

Captain Step 1: $51,090 annually

Standard Benefits

TCLEOSE Certificate Pay:
Intermediate Certificate $900 annually Advanced Certificate $1,200 annually Master Certificate $2,400 annually

Longevity:
$48 annually per year of service (25 year max.)

Vacation:
4.92 hours accrued bi-weekly (15 days annually)

Sick Leave:
4.92 hours accrued bi-weekly (15 days annually)

Floating Holiday:
Employee shall receive 1 personal holiday

Pension:
Texas Municipal Retirement System Employee contributes 7% - City matches 2 to 1.

Insurance:
Employees are provided with paid health and life insurance. (Dependent coverage available at employee expense). Optional cafeteria plans are available.

Assignment Pay:
 FTO Pay - Employees that are assigned as Field Training Officers are paid $100 a month

Clothing Allowance:
Employees are paid $100 a month for certain assignments.
