FEEL THE SPIRIT OF JACKSON STREET

At the heart of this revitalized business and entertainment center is the Jackson Street District, which stretches from Commerce to Fourth Streets.  The building architecture here dates from the teens and twenties to the 1050s.  Attractively restored storefronts and colorful awnings line the street.  Old fashioned street lamps, benches and blooming flowers add to the feeling of Main Street America; a place where family businesses flourished and personal service was an everyday occurrence.  That spirit still resides on Jackson Street.

Jackson Street is also known as the "Antique Capital of the Valley."  More than 80 antique and collectible dealers occupy space in a host of antique malls and shops within a four block radius, making it a mecca for collectors.  Delightful specialty shops, clothing, furniture, jewelry, fabric and arts and crafts stores, a coffee house, sandwich shops and restaurants are all within easy walking distance.

You're welcome to relax and explore to your heart's content in downtown Harlingen, a world apart from the everyday.

CROSSROADS OF THE VALLEY

Harlingen, a city of nearly 60,000 inhabitants, lies at the crossroads of the Rio Grande Valley, where Expressways 77 and 83 meets.

Over the last decade, thanks to the successful renewal efforts of the Harlingen Downtown Improvement District, Harlingen's 15-block downtown area has undergone a dramatic transformation.

Palm trees, blooming plants, wall murals, antique street lamps and sidewalk benches have been added, creating a congenial, inviting atmosphere for shoppers and tourists alike.  Annual events such as the Jackson Street Jubilee and Hoe-Down and the Fourth of July Parade and Picnic have helped build civic pride and foster community spirit.

Tour the specialty shops and stores, Browse and shop, grab a cup of coffee or a bite to eat, sit and talk on a park bench and take in the colorful, thriving scene.
