The Environment Code Enforcement Office is involved with several activities. One major concern in Harlingen is illegal dumping. Illegal dumping is the placement of any junk, trash, and debris in alleys, on roadsides, canal banks, and private properties. The Code Enforcement office is directly involved in locating and correcting violations. A breakdown of violations are: Solid waste weighing 15 pounds or less or has a volume of 13 gallons or less. This is a Class C Misdemeanor with fines up to $200.00. Solid waste weighing more than 15 but less than 500 pounds or has a volume of more that 13 gallons but less than 100 cubic feet. This is a Class B misdemeanor with fines up to $2,000 and up to 180 days in jail. Solid waste weighing 500 pounds or more or has a volume of 100 cubic feet or more. This is a Class A misdemeanor with fines up to $4,000 and 1 year in jail. Other violations that the Environmental Code office deals with are: Illegal postings, which is the posting of any type of sign on City Right of Way. This includes telephone poles, trees, and curbs. Littering from vehicles. Improper covering of a truck, or trailer junk, trash, and debris, so as to allow debris to empty out on City streets. Vision obstructions-including signs, fences, brush, trees and anything the impairs the vision of motorists. Graffiti City wide. Zoning violations such as business's being operated in a residential zone. These are just some examples of a few of the things we work on daily. We are here to help you.
