The Civil Service Director provides direct support to the City Civil Service Commission as mandated by Local Government Code 143.012.  The Civil Service Director is directly responsible for performing those duties required by the Civil Service Commission and acts as secretary to the Commission.  Additionally, the Civil Service Director assures that the City complies with Local Government Code 143 (Municipal Civil Service) in the personnel administration of police and fire classification and appointments, compensation practices, disciplinary actions, leaves, entry and promotional examinations, and other statutory provisions.  The Civil Service Director, in coordination with the Human Resources Department, also facilitates employees and management services within the City's two civil service departments, Police and Fire.

The employment process will include a written examination, physical ability test, background investigation, oral interview, drug screening, physical examination, and psychological examination.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS TO APPLY

EDUCATION/FIREFIGHTER: Successful completion of 30 accredited college hours; or 2 years of military service with an honorable discharge; or have current certification from the Texas Commission of Fire Protection.

EDUCATION/POLICE OFFICER: Have high school diploma; or have GED with successful completion of 12 accredited college hours with a minimum GPA of 2.0; or 2 years of military service with an honorable discharge; or have current license from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officers Standard and Education (TCLEOSE).

AGE/FIREFIGHTER:   At least 21 years of age, and not have reached his/her 36th birthday.

AGE/POLICE OFFICER:  At least 21 years of age, and not have reached his/her 36th birthday.  A person who is 36 years of age and under 45 may qualify if the person has at least 5 years military experience with an honorable discharge or 5 years of previous peace officer experience.

CITIZENSHIP: Shall be a United States citizen and must be able to read, write, and speak English.


STANDARD BENEFITS

STARTING SALARY/FIREFIGHTER:   $26,407/yearly

STARTING SALARY/POLICE OFFICER:   $26,205/yearly

LONGEVITY:  $4/month per year of service. (up to 25 years)

PENSION/FIREFIGHTER: Employee contributes 12% per pay period and the City contributes 11%.

PENSION/POLICE OFFICER: Texas Municipal Retirement System. Employee contributes 7% and the City matches it two to one.

VACATION: 15 days annually

SICK LEAVE:   15 days annually

HOLIDAYS:  9 paid holidays per year.
